Caffeine After Midnight

So there I am standing in the bar last night. It’s late, past midnight, and it’s been slow. I’ve done just about everything I can possibly do. Then the espresso machine catches my eye. Hey, there’s something I can do– learn to make fancy-looking cappuccinos! It might take me a couple tries, but caffeine doesn’t affect me anyway.

It is now 4:30 am, and my mind has been positively buzzing for the last several hours. There is no sleep in sight. Which wouldn’t be so bad if I didn’t have to be up at 8:30. Ahh well.

I figure as long as I’m up, I should at least do something productive. So here’s a brief update with more to come.

I submitted for the job in Tennessee, and expect to hear something back soon. I’m pretty split on my odds of getting a good offer (or any offer) from them, so I’m putting it right at fifty-fifty in my mind. And oddly, I’m OK with that. I’m feeling pretty Zen.

If I get a good offer, this is a great launching pad for a transition into Tennessee. Free rent and a contract-based position. This will let me get there, save some money, and start putting together plans for my next project.

If I don’t get it, I’m quite content to be here for at least a few more months. I really like my bar. The people are awesome, and I’ve become close with a lot of them. (The sous chef and I in particular are pretty much BFF’s now). I like my chances of becoming a bartender too. (I’m already making inroads.) And honestly, I feel satisfied after a day’s work there. That’s a good feeling.

Taskrabbit could be another source of income. I discovered it a few months ago, but I’m just now getting done with the whole application/acceptance process to be a “Tasker”. It seems like an awesomely flexible way to earn money. Basically, you enter whatever skills you have and set hourly prices for them, and people can hire you to help with pretty much anything. I’ve already completed my first task and have another one scheduled tomorrow. It seems like tasking could be both a.) lucrative, and b.) an interesting peek into the lives of affluent New Yorkers. At the very least, it could provide interesting stories to write about!

So, the moral of the story is that whichever way I go, I’m feeling confident that I have a path forward. It’s a good feeling.

Now I’m going to try to harness that zen and get some sleep.

(PS, Caffeine After Midnight could be a good band name. Someone get on it.)

Hi! Wanted you to know I read all your posts. I don’t know what else to say, but keep writing them! Sounds like so much fun in New York. You know I’m totes jelly.
